Homework

At The Pines School, we define ‘homework‘ as any work or activities which pupils are asked to do outside lesson time, either on their own or with parents or carers. Homework need not, and should not, get in the way of other activities which children may do after school, such as sport, music and clubs of all kinds. (UNICEF Rights Respecting, Article 31 states ‘Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.)

Aims:

  1. To set appropriate homework for our children, which is specifically matched to their ability.
  2. To develop an effective partnership between the school and parents/carers in pursuing the aims of the school and in particular, in all matters relating to homework.
  3. To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding particularly in English and Maths.
  4. To extend school learning through additional reading.

Homework Practice at The Pines School

At The Pines School we do not stipulate times, as the most important aspect of Homework is the involvement of parents/carers in their child’s education and the opportunity for children to consolidate learning. Staff work with parents/carers and children to encourage learning to take place at home and ensure activities are available for those who wish to extend their learning into the home. Class teachers are responsible for ensuring that the demands of homework are manageable for pupils. Homework is presented at the beginning of each half term with a topic based web which provides families with ideas on how they can extend their children’s learning at home.

Example Topic Homework Overview for Parents:

We also have online subscriptions to Bug Club and Purple Mash which the children can access from home. If a family do not have a computer or internet connection children will be able to take home reading books. Additionally, children may choose a library book to share with their family or a set of spellings may be sent home each week.

GCSE Group

A piece of English, Maths and an additional subject are available each week to those who wish to extend their learning further at home.

Children will not be penalised for not completing homework.
